THE SCIENCE OF APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS
Applied Behavior Analysis, referred to as ABA, is based on the science of learning. ABA is used to create positive and meaningful changes in behavior by changing an individual’s environment using evidence-based teaching strategies. There are decades of research that support the effectiveness of ABA in treating not only children with autism spectrum disorders, but in teaching skills and increasing appropriate behavior for children and teenagers with a variety of behavioral concerns.
While the focus of ABA is always on teaching appropriate behavior, the process also includes the reduction of problematic behaviors, such as aggression, self-injury, tantrums, throwing, bolting, self-stimulatory behaviors, etc. ABA methods are individualized for each child and family!
A Report of the Surgeon General states, “Thirty years of research demonstrated the efficacy of applied behavioral methods in reducing inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning, and appropriate social behavior.”
